Posting on job boards for active jobs? Good luck. In economics there’s a term called “diminishing returns”. Loosely defined, it simply means that at a certain point, output/production (in this case the production/output is filling open requisitions) decreases as input (in this case we’re using job postings as the input) is increased. Essentially – you can only handle so many candidates with the limited resources your company has for the hiring process. With the influx of “everyone and their brother” posting fake resumes, embellishing (and in many cases blatantly lying) about their work history and qualifications, it’s getting much more difficult to filter through the fodder in order to find that diamond in the rough.
The reason for the current dilemma hiring managers and other enterprise stake holders are facing hiring managers is simple: accessibility. Prior to the “job board” age, companies found most employees by referral. The companies’ employees would refer potential candidates that they KNOW have good work ethic, qualifications, etc. That still happens, but due to certain standards and compliance requirements that HR and companies face – it’s hard for them to meet those requirements. Also – the referring employee is taking a risk by referring someone due to the “guilty by association” stigma.
The title of this blog came to me when talking with my mother-in-law about my extremely talented (that’s an understatement…I would go as to say she’s a prodigy) and creative (little) sister-in-law about a new business she’s starting. She’s 18 and just finished her first year in college and while home for the summer started making creative cakes and desserts for friends and family – and now for the whole town. Not that I’m necessarily INTO cakes, but these cakes are nothing short of astonishing. Click this link to see her FB page: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Monte-Vista-CO/Dollys-Desserts/101185886595814?ref=ts&__a=10&ajaxpipe=1The problem is, the more orders she gets the harder it is to maintain the quality of her products.
The same concept can be applied to recruiting and job boards. The more postings you make, the less efficient your workforce is due to the time consuming process of setting up interviews with ultra-busy hiring authorities, qualifying candidates, interviewing, checking back ground, checking references, negotiating, extending a reasonable offer, hoping the candidate accepts and finally – on-boarding.
This is a process that should be outsourced to professionals that do not succeed unless they provide high-quality service to their clients. Hiring the right employees is THE MOST IMPORTANT part of any business. I would love to hear anyone dispute that.
